Vineyard Chic Wedding Guest Attire in Argentina
Do not panic! How to embrace the wardrobe challenge of a Millennial Wedding in Argentina (or any vineyard/nature location for that matter).
Not to brag, but at this point in my life I feel like I know what to wear to a wedding. My friends have been married and remarried and my friends’ children are now getting married so I have my go-to looks, my go-to gifts, and have learned the hard way to accept only one of the signature cocktails on offer before moving on to white wine. The only thing left on my wedding guest bucket list is convincing my husband to take dance lessons so that we can be that adorable older couple doing the box step to my favorite wedding song, Earth Wind and Fire’s “September.”
When the invitation to our niece’s nuptials in Mendoza, Argentina arrived, it naturally included a link to the wedding website with adorable photos of the happy couple complete with a detailed itinerary of events for the wedding weekend and most importantly, suggested attire.
Welcome Lunch - Vineyard Chic
Ceremony and Reception - Black Tie Optional
Farewell Party - Casual
In my early twenties I worked with a woman who was quite well-to-do and not afraid talk to talk about it. Working was kind of a hobby to her and I was fascinated by many things about her lifestyle - one of which was that when she went on a trip, she shipped her clothing in advance. I remember eating lunch with her and listening as she described her outfits for a wedding she was planning to attend in Napa. She was going on about how about her assistant was preparing her wardrobe for shipping. This struck me as the height of sophistication and I imagined that one day I too would have an assistant who shipped my wedding guest ensembles in advance. I’m still waiting for that day to arrive but I do think about it every time I am panic packing.
The “vineyard chic” part of the suggested attire gave me the most trouble. When I was planning for this trip, I was heavily invested in season two of The White Lotus. My first set of outfit ideas - colorful resort looks inspired by the White Lotus characters frolicking around on the coast of Italy - were summarily dismissed by the one friend I have who has actually been to Mendoza. “Too beachy” she said, “think earthy countryside and a little bit cowboy/western.” Cowboy/western?
I did a lot of research and consultations with my younger millennial colleagues who seem to be off to weddings every weekend and came up with the following looks. By wearing some old standbys in my closet, purchasing some things on consignment, and buying just one new dress at a great price, I stayed within a reasonable budget. I did not stick to the weight limit for checked bags but with this kind of itinerary, who could? Which brings us back to why it’s best to ship your clothing in advance.
What I wore
Event One: The Welcome Lunch at Finca Piedra Infinita (a beautiful vineyard)
Boden Skirt: The star of the show! Once I ruled out my dresses that screamed “I am by the sea”I pulled out this cutie skirt from a few seasons ago from the back of my closet. You can find it on resale with the search term Boden Rainbow Village Tie Waist Cotton Skirt. Here is an ebay listing.
Anthropologie Maeve Ruched Top: from earlier this spring - No longer available on the website and I couldn’t find it on resale yet, but any white top will do with this skirt. If it’s a little cropped it’s better because the skirt is a bit high waisted. A crisp white button down would work also work well.
Vintage Judith Lieber Bag: The Real Real is a gold mine of bags like this and I love them!
Vintage Pink Celine Sunglasses: Again, found on The Real Real and there are many more where that came from.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Sandals: I took a chance on these on The Real Real, without being sure about size and comfort but they were 100% for both! They were $35. One of my best finds of 2022. I love SJP shoes but paying full price makes my head spin.
Event Two: Ceremony and Reception at Ver Sacrum Vineyard at the Vines, Uco Valley (a stunning vineyard and resort).
Veronica Beard Kupa Dress: THIS DRESS! I tried on dozens of dresses and was pretty far down the road of a Reformation option but I wanted something a little more original and I was so happy to find this beauty in February (I think it was an early fall dress) on super sale in a VB retail store. You can find it on resale if you search by the style name.
Same bag, shoes, sunglasses as above.
Side note: The brides walked down the aisle to a strings arrangement of “Dreams” by the Cranberries and it was so moving. I cried and cried.
Event Three: The Farewell Party at Bodega Gimenez Rilli (another lovely vineyard)
A.L.C Cecilia Patchwork Gown: This is from last season - you can find it on resale by searching for the style name. It’s silk and it’s stunning. At 5'4, I did need to have it hemmed quite a bit but it’s worth it. I do realize my last two outfits are a bit brown forward but I felt this color palette was in sync with the vineyard surroundings and the season (the wedding was this past March, which is late summer/early fall in Argentina.)
Same bag, shoes, sunglasses as above.
I really felt fabulous in all of these looks and it was so much fun to see how the other wedding guests interpreted the suggested dress code. There was a bit of everything and an extraordinarily well dressed crowd overall.
When I searched the entire internet for vineyard chic attire for a wedding in Mendoza, not a single thing turned up. I hope this helps someone out there!
XOXO,
Tara
